I don’t need a complicated makeup routine.

In fact, most mornings, I don’t have time for a routine at all, which is why I keep it to a 5-minute makeup routine.

As a working mom, whether I wear makeup on a given day depends on what my day looks like: how many in-person meetings I have, who they’re with, and whether I’ll be on Zoom all day or sitting across from people.

And let’s be honest: some mornings I’m not thinking about being fancy. I’m thinking about how I was awake from 1 to 2 a.m. and then spent the rest of the night being a human pillow until 6 a.m.

Those are the mornings I appreciate makeup for what it is for me: a few quick steps that make me look a little more awake and a little more put together.

What I Tell My Kids About Makeup

Before I had kids, I mostly thought of makeup as something I put on to “get pretty” for the day or night. Now I don’t want my kids to grow up thinking makeup is something you need in order to be pretty. And when they saw me putting it on, they asked what I was doing and why, so I needed a simple way to talk about it.

So in our house, I talk about makeup as getting a little fancy.

Sometimes we’re just having a normal Tuesday. Sometimes we’re going somewhere special. Sometimes Mom puts on makeup because she feels like being a little fancy that day.

It doesn’t mean I wasn’t pretty before I put it on.

For me, makeup can be fun. It can be practical. Sometimes it’s both. And on a rushed work morning, it’s simply something I can do in five minutes that makes me feel a little more ready for the day.

Start With Skin

If I’m going to take the time to put on makeup, I want the skin part to be easy.

Colorescience Sunforgettable Total Protection Face Shield Flex SPF 50

This is one of my favorite shortcuts because it combines mineral sunscreen with tinted coverage. The tone-adapting pigments even out my skin as I blend it, so I get some coverage without a separate layer of foundation. On a truly rushed morning, this can be enough on its own.

The Pore Step I Didn’t Know I Needed: Benefit POREfessional Primer

I have larger pores on my nose, and they’re the one spot where makeup never looks quite as smooth as I’d like. So if I’m wearing makeup, I use the Benefit primer on my nose before anything else.

It helps smooth and blur the look of my pores, so foundation or tinted SPF goes on more evenly. It’s one small extra step, and only in the one spot that needs it.

I found this one by accident. I hadn’t updated my makeup in a while, so I went shopping in person and ended up chatting with the salespeople. If it’s been a while since you refreshed your routine, it’s worth trying things in person. There may be something out there you’d actually like, and you don’t know what you don’t know.

Haus Labs Triclone Skin Tech Foundation

Colorescience is enough for most days. But when I want more coverage, this is the one I reach for, whether it’s a date night or an important meeting. It’s buildable, has a natural finish, and holds up through a full day of meetings.

I don’t need that every day. That’s kind of the point.

Concealer: My Key to Looking Awake in Five Minutes: NARS Radiant Creamy Concealer

Sometimes I don’t need a whole face of makeup. Sometimes I just look tired.

That’s where this NARS concealer comes in. It brightens and corrects without settling into my fine lines, and it makes a noticeable difference without taking much time. That’s especially useful after the 1 to 2 a.m. wake-up call and several hours of human-pillow duty.

Brows: The Fastest Way to Look More Put Together: Rare Beauty Brow Gel

If I have almost no time, I’ll do my brows. This Rare Beauty Brow Gel fills and sets my brows in one step. It takes seconds, but somehow makes the rest of my face look more intentional, even if I haven’t done much else.

Add a Little Cheek Color: Merit Flush Balm

This works well for a rushed morning because I can blend it in with my fingers. No brush, no complicated technique. Just a little color on my cheeks to make me look more alive.

Sometimes that’s really all I need.

Mascara I Can Count On: L’Oréal Double Extend Tubing Mascara

I have very little interest in spending my morning worrying about whether my mascara will end up under my eyes. This L’Oréal mascara is one I keep coming back to because the tubing formula resists smudging and flaking all day. When I’m ready to take it off, it comes off easily with warm water or a swipe of micellar water.

Stays put when I need it to, comes off when I want it to. That’s exactly what I want from a workday mascara.

And Then Lip Color: fresh Sugar Lip Treatment in Berry

Lip color is probably the easiest way to make a 5-minute face feel finished, and this is my go-to. This treatment gives me sheer, buildable color along with hydration. I can put it on without thinking too hard. Honestly, it’s the easiest way to look finished in about three seconds.

I have a few other favorite lip colors, so I’ll share those in their own post soon.

The 5-Minute Face, in Real Life

A 5-minute makeup routine isn’t about doing ten steps as fast as possible. If I need more coverage, I add the Haus Labs foundation. If my pores are bothering me, I add the primer. If I’m getting ready for something important, I add more.

But I don’t think a makeup routine needs to be complicated to be useful.

Sometimes I have five minutes. Sometimes I have two. Sometimes I look at my calendar, see that I’m working from home with no meetings, and decide I don’t need any makeup at all.

And sometimes I have a day full of in-person meetings, look in the mirror after a very questionable night of sleep, and think: Okay, let’s do the 5-minute face!

This is the makeup that works for my actual life. When I buy something, I’m not asking whether it’s impressive in a perfectly staged beauty routine, but whether I’ll actually reach for it on a Tuesday morning.
